Appearance
How ordinary experience is immediately taken to be objects, situations and a world.
Six live meetings
Six live small-group meetings exploring body, world, time, space and self through direct inquiry.
The workshop
This Radiant Space is a six-meeting workshop exploring the familiar structures of experience: body, world, time, space, others and self.
These usually appear as settled facts. There is a body here, a world around us, a past behind us and a future still to come.
In the workshop, we examine the evidence for those familiar conclusions and see what is actually found.
There are guided inquiries, work in pairs and time to talk together. Each meeting takes one part of the known world and follows the inquiry further.
The aim is not to replace ordinary experience with a spiritual account of it, but to discover how much stranger and less settled it is than it first appears.
What are body, world, time and self when we look directly?
The central move
A sensation is taken to be a body. An image is taken to be the past. Distance is taken to be plainly there. A thought is taken to belong to someone.
We look at each of these directly and ask what is actually found, what is inferred and what remains unresolved.
The inquiry moves through the structures that make the ordinary world feel so definite, without requiring us to deny or replace any of them.
Areas of inquiry
How ordinary experience is immediately taken to be objects, situations and a world.
What is actually present when the familiar sense of a body located here is examined?
Are distance, location, inside and outside found as plainly as they seem to be?
What is memory actually made of? Where is the future found? What is time when we look directly?
Is a separate person found standing apart from experience, or is that also part of what appears?
How the inquiry continues when we are distracted, tired, emotional or simply getting on with the day.
The meetings
The group meets live online for six sessions, usually over a period of several weeks.
Each meeting takes one area of experience and includes direct checks that we do together.
You work in pairs with simple prompts, giving each person time to look properly rather than answer too quickly.
We come back together and talk about what happened in the looking, including the places where the usual interpretation still feels completely convincing.
Between meetings there are simple things to look at in ordinary life, so the work does not stay inside the session.
The character of the work
There is nothing you have to believe, and no special experience you are expected to produce.
The group is kept small, with time for questions, uncertainty and individual exploration.
We keep returning to what is actually present and checking again. People may not reach the same conclusions.
Everything we discuss is brought back to what can actually be found.
Who it is for
No previous experience of Peter Brown, meditation, non-duality or philosophy is required.
It may also suit people who know the territory well but want to spend more time actually looking.
It may be useful if spiritual practice has become another attempt to arrive somewhere later or recover a previous state.
No special condition
The inquiry does not depend on becoming unusually calm, silent, focused or clear.
You may be tired, distracted, emotional or confused. All of that can be looked at too.
We are not trying to produce a better experience. We start with whatever is here.
