A practical introduction to direct inquiry

Learning to Look is a four-week live workshop in the basic practice of direct inquiry.

We begin with ordinary experience and learn how to distinguish what is present from what has been supplied by naming, memory and interpretation.

The emphasis is practical. You will be shown how to begin, how to recognise when explanation has taken over and how to return to the evidence.

The aim is not to master a set of ideas, but to acquire a way of looking you can use for yourself.

Look again.

Looking is not analysing

This is not a matter of thinking more carefully or finding a better explanation.

We take something simple, examine the evidence and notice what has been added through naming, memory and assumption.

We also look at the ways the inquiry is lost: moving too quickly to a conclusion, trying to produce the right answer or analysing instead of looking.

The practice is to notice that movement and return to what is actually present.

Four live meetings

We meet online once a week for four weeks. Each 90-minute meeting combines guided inquiry, discussion and short exercises in pairs.

Between meetings, there will be a simple inquiry to explore in ordinary life.

There will also be time for questions and for working directly with the places where the looking becomes difficult.

What we will explore

What does it mean to look?

We begin with simple checks and learn how to identify the evidence before explanation takes over.

What has been supplied?

We separate what is present from naming, memory, assumption and the conclusions they seem to support.

How do we lose the looking?

We notice analysis, performance and the urge to settle the question too quickly.

How do we continue?

We take the inquiry into ordinary experience and learn how to begin again without depending on the workshop.

A supported place to begin

Direct inquiry can be simple to explain and surprisingly difficult to do.

In a live meeting, we can see the exact moment when a question has become an idea, when an answer sounds convincing but has not come from looking, or when someone is trying to produce the right result.

There is room to stop, examine what happened and begin again. That immediate support is central to the workshop.

The aim is to leave with a way of looking that can continue beyond the four meetings.

No previous experience is needed

You may be entirely new to this work, or familiar with meditation, non-duality or direct inquiry.

What matters is a willingness to look carefully and allow the familiar explanation to be questioned.

No knowledge of Peter Brown’s work is required.

The Yoga of Radiant Presence

Learning to Look draws on the Yoga of Radiant Presence developed by Peter Brown.

It introduces one foundational movement within that work: examining experience directly rather than beginning with what we already believe it to be.

Here, yoga does not mean a physical discipline or a technique for producing a particular state. It means investigating the evidence of experience for yourself.

You do not need to know Peter’s work in advance. The workshop is designed to let you encounter the inquiry by doing it.

A practical feel for the looking

By the end of the four weeks, you should be able to begin a simple inquiry, recognise when explanation has taken over and return to the evidence.

You will have a practical feel for the difference between looking at experience and relying on the familiar account of it.

The workshop does not offer a final conclusion. It gives you the basic skill needed to continue.

Two ways of continuing

Learning to Look is a complete workshop in its own right. If you want to continue, the same inquiry can be taken further in two different ways.

Six-week paired inquiry
